Chapter 14
As if knowing she was there, feeling her presence, Adam turned. It took a minute for his eyes to focus, but he spotted her. At first he didn’t move, didn’t smile, didn’t wave, and Ella held her breath. Feeling stupid, standing by his car all dressed up and clearly for his benefit, her cheeks warmed. Regret took hold, and she thought the whole thing was a bad idea.
At least before, things were okay. He talked to her. She saw him at the beach, sometimes. He’d even gone to the store to see her. But now, what if she pushed too far, made it clear how she felt, and he didn’t return the feeling. Now that she was throwing herself at him, it might ruin everything. The horror of that impacted her fully in the second it took Adam to react.
He held up his hand in greeting and started walked toward her through the sand. The late afternoon sun glowed on the horizon, giving him a golden glow. Ella stood frozen, one hand on her tiny bag, the other on the hood of the car. Whatever was going to happen was going to happen soon.
She didn’t start breathing normally again until he stepped in front of her and smiled. He kept smiling, and she looked away, embarrassed. Was he laughing at her or was he pleased? Unable to tell and still fearing the worst, she avoided his gaze.
He lifted her chin, so she had no choice but to look into his amber eyes. Standing so close, she noticed the variations of color, the amber having some darker streaks. She felt weak with him so near.
“You are ravishing,” he whispered, and she nearly collapsed with relief. “You’ve captivated me…. there will be consequences.”
Ella fought for a response but still recovering, only managed a tiny smile. His response impacted her in a good way, and her confidence rose.
“I had hoped there would be…. consequences,” she finally uttered, unable to conceive that she’d been so direct. Around Adam she was different, saying things she’d never dare say around anyone else.
Adam’s eyes sparkled and he leaned closer like he might kiss her. Ella instinctively closed her eyes, anxious for his touch.
“I don’t think you’re dressed for the beach,” he said, and her eyes flew open. “Let’s go somewhere. I’ll have to change first though. I’m underdressed. You don’t mind stopping by my house so I can change do you?” He opened her door and held out his hand to help her in.
No, she didn’t mind. He was taking her to his house. This was going in the right direction. It was going to work out.
“Sure, I’d love to see your house,” she answered.
The Ferrari revved to life, with the harmony and poetic lyrics of a Jewel song echoing around Adam and Ella. For the short ride, the vibrations of the sound system pounded into them. Sinking into the luxury of the leather seat, Ella let the thrill of the ride and beat of the music exhilarate her.
